Mycena luteopallens (Pk.) Sacc. Walnut Mycena. Cap 1-1.5cm across, ovate to bell-shaped, then soon flattened; bright yellow to orange, fading to white; slightly downy then smooth, translucent when wet. Gills adnexed, almost distant; yellow to apricot with paler margins; minutely hairy. Stem 40-100 x 1-1.5mm; pale yellow with prominent hairs at base. Spores ellipsoid, amyloid, 7-9 x 4-5.5µ. Deposit white. Habitat only found growing on the remains of hickory and walnut shells. Very common. Found throughout eastern North America, west to Michigan. Season September-November. Edibility not known -avoid. Comment A very pretty species, easily recognized by its specific habitat. |
